Charge-M8, an EV charging expert based in Manchester, has launched Libra, a new dynamic load balancing device, which the company believes to be unique in the global EV charging market. Set to be available from September, Libra allows various brands of EV chargers to be load balanced using integrated Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) platforms.
Ian Hughes, Technical Director of Charge-M8, explained: “For our commercial EV chargers, we specifically chose not to use directly connected load balancing due to the reliability issues and long-distance reading inaccuracies we’ve encountered. Particularly in commercial installations, the incoming power supply is often located far from the EV chargers, making the use of directly connected CT clamps impractical.”
Creating a stand-alone, hardware-agnostic device that works with OCPP platforms and supports both new installations and retrofits was the clear solution.
Hughes continued: “Making installation easy and user-friendly was a priority for us. The Libra device includes built-in 4G GSM communication as standard, with Ethernet and Wi-Fi available as alternatives, making it an installer’s dream to set up.”
He added: “When we sought feedback from our OCPP platform partners and installers, they posed the following questions:
· Q: Can voltage readings and current direction be monitored to track both import and export?
A: We added this capability during development.
· Q: Is there a limit to the number of CT clamps the Libra device supports?
A: The device can handle CT clamps rated up to 120A, with options for 400A on request. For larger incoming supplies, Rogowski coils with a 110mmØ diameter, suitable for systems of 1kVA and above, are also available.
· Q: How easy is commissioning?
A: We’ve used the same 4.3” touchscreen that features on Charge-M8’s commercial EV chargers, making commissioning a straightforward and frustration-free process, without the need for apps or Wi-Fi hotspots.”
Julian Smith, CEO of Charge-M8, stated: “The Libra DLB Device launch is another significant step in our development as a manufacturer of commercial EV charging products. We’re committed to providing the best technical support and commissioning for installers worldwide.
“After intensive prototype testing across the UK, Europe, the UAE, the US, and Canada since November 2023, the Libra device is now ready for launch. With simple plug-and-play integration across over 40 OCPP platforms worldwide, it’s designed to be a hit with installers globally.”
Charge-M8 is rapidly becoming a trusted supplier of workplace EV charging solutions. As an OZEV-approved provider for both domestic and commercial installations, the company offers exceptional technical support from fully qualified installers. Recently, Charge-M8 earned accreditation from the UK’s Buy with Confidence scheme, run by Trading Standards, highlighting its commitment to customer service and business integrity.
In a market filled with EV charging and load balancing options, speaking to a true expert, rather than a call centre, can make all the difference.
